It took a year to read the Bible, then almost 9 months to read the Apocrypha. Now, I'm going to try to offer reflections on the Narrative Lectionary. But, I won't be posting daily--at least, for a while.

Baptism, a Reflection on Mark 1:4-5

The first Sunday after Epiphany is designated as the recognition of the Baptism of the Lord. These texts chosen by the lectionary deal with themes reflecting the baptism of Jesus by John (Acts and  Mark) and on baptism itself. The commentary in Texts for Preaching B cite such as new beginnings, the power of God in the human arena, and divine revelation.

In Mark, we read how John was attracting a large audience as he preached in the wilderness. People from throughout the countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were were coming to hear him.

(All the people? Non-Jews, too? )

They came because they wanted a new life. They wanted to be forgiven for their sins.
