We aren't God, but we do have some responsibilities. The earth that God created for us requires some caretaking.
Reading John Goldingay raises some tension in interpreting this passage. Humans are given dominion; that is, we are in charge, we are like royalty. Yet, even though all these things are put under our feet--even those birds in the air, we are still not taking the place of God. Rather, we are doing the work on God's behalf.
