It took a year to read the Bible, then almost 9 months to read the Apocrypha. Now, I'm going to try to offer reflections on the Narrative Lectionary. But, I won't be posting daily--at least, for a while.

Daily Prayer, Saturday, October 8, 2011

Praise the Lord! O give thanks to the Lord.

Morning
Invitatory Psalm  67
God, be gracious to us and bless us
and make your face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known upon earth,
your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.

The earth has yielded its increase;
God, our God, has blessed us.
May God continue to bless us;
let all the ends of the earth revere you.

Psalms 141, 146

Daily Lectionary Reading, Psalm 106:1-6, 19-23
Praise the LORD ! Give thanks to the LORD because he is good, because his faithful love endures forever. 2 Who could possibly repeat all of the LORD ’s mighty acts or publicly recount all his praise? 3 The people who uphold justice, who always do what is right, are truly happy! 4 Remember me, LORD , with the favor you show your people. Visit me with your saving help 5 so I can experience the good things your chosen ones experience, so I can rejoice in the joy of your nation, so I can praise along with your possession. 6 We have sinned— right along with our ancestors. We’ve done what is wrong. We’ve acted wickedly.

19 They made a calf at Horeb, bowing down to a metal idol. 20 They traded their glorious God for an image of a bull that eats grass. 21 They forgot the God who saved them— the one who had done great things in Egypt, 22 wondrous works in the land of Ham, awesome deeds at the Reed Sea. 23 So God determined that he would destroy them— except for the fact that Moses, his chosen one, stood in the way, right in front of him, and turned God’s destructive anger away.

Today's Prayer: Comforting God, we come as individuals with our own sin; but we also come as a community with our communal sin. Each of us are burdened with the memories of past sin; of past shared sinfulness, when we have turned our eyes away from the wonder and majesty of our Guiding God, and our life’s choices are contrary to the ways of God. We come with heavy hearts to lay before you our shared and individual sin, aware that we have failed each other and you. Merciful God, heal us, forgive us and renew us. Amen.
