It took a year to read the Bible, then almost 9 months to read the Apocrypha. Now, I'm going to try to offer reflections on the Narrative Lectionary. But, I won't be posting daily--at least, for a while.

Daily Prayer, Friday, June 7, 2013

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God all my life long.

Morning
Invitatory Psalm 118
Give thanks to the LORD because he is good,
because his faithful love lasts forever.
2 Let Israel say it:
“ God’s faithful love lasts forever! ”
….

5 In tight circumstances, I cried out to the LORD .
The LORD answered me with wide-open spaces.
6 The LORD is for me —I won’t be afraid.
What can anyone do to me?
….

19 Open the gates of righteousness for me
so I can come in and give thanks to the LORD!
20 This is the LORD’s gate;
those who are righteous enter through it.
21 I thank you because you answered me,
because you were my saving help.
22 The stone rejected by the builders
is now the main foundation stone!
23 This has happened because of the LORD;
it is astounding in our sight!
24 This is the day the LORD acted;
we will rejoice and celebrate in it!

….
28 You are my God—I will give thanks to you!
You are my God—I will lift you up high!
29 Give thanks to the LORD because he is good,
because his faithful love lasts forever.

Psalm 131, 132, 133

Daily Lectionary Reading, 1 Kings 17:17-24
17 After these things, the son of the widow, who was the matriarch of the household, became ill. His sickness got steadily worse until he wasn’t breathing anymore. 18 She said to Elijah, “ What’s gone wrong between us, man of God? Have you come to me to call attention to my sin and kill my son? ” 19 Elijah replied, “ Give your son to me. ” He took her son from her and carried him to the upper room where he was staying. Elijah laid him on his bed. 20 Elijah cried out to the LORD , “ LORD my God, why is it that you have brought such evil upon the widow that I am staying with by killing her son? ” 21 Then he stretched himself over the boy three times and cried out to the LORD , “ LORD my God, please give this boy’s life back to him. ” 22 The LORD listened to Elijah’s voice and gave the boy his life back. And he lived. 23 Elijah brought the boy down from the upper room of the house and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, “ Look, your son is alive! ” 24 “ Now I know that you really are a man of God, ” the woman said to Elijah, “ and that the LORD’s word is truly in your mouth. ”

Prayer for Today: Lord, our God, we turn to you when we need comfort, help, and healing. Strengthen our faith. Amen.
